Nice but too small for me

I should have known. It is well suited for a Demi-tasse but even for my small cups the diameter is awkward. Plus I just want more coffee.... so I should have ordered the larger Phin.

    I don't know how but...

....this has made my coffee taste better. I've had my personal 12oz size Bodum French Press for a couple years, with a lot of good use, but the grounds were starting to get through, so it was time for something new. Considering how I am not a coffee expert and am trying different things, this Phin Filter is so forgiving. It sits so nicely on my work desk when I'm not using it, and I love that I don't need to use paper filters. I've even used it to brew tea leaves!

My one gripe though is that this just barely sits on the 500ml Glass Server. It can, but it's like playing Operation and one false touch will tilt your Phin Filter off-kilter. However, if you happen to have a smaller beaker, like the 12oz sized Bodum French Press, you can use it over that and pour over into your iced/milked cup. I suppose my old press will have some use yet! :)

Despite it's smaller size, it does fit on most standard sized mugs (avg. 3 inches diameter). I generally prefer a smaller cup (8oz-10oz) and this is perfect. If you prefer drinking 12oz or more, I recommend getting the 12oz Phin Filter. I can actually make a 12oz cup from this with a couple pours, but the strength is lighter. So, really, it's about what you're looking for in terms of your preferred cup size and caffeine strength; your choice of blend may also play a part in it.

All in all, thanks for reading my essay, it's my new favorite brew tool! :)

Works well, but if you are planning on making cafe sua da, I would recommend the larger versions, or you will end up having to make several pours.

    Why won't my coffee drip?

Please read our guide on dialing in your phin filter here.

How do I keep my phin filter clean?

Please read our guide on how to use and clean a phin filter here.

Can I order replacement parts for my phin filter?

At this time, unfortunately, we do not sell replacement parts for the phin filter. Please contact for further information and assistance.

How is the phin filter different from pour over?

Phin filter brewed coffee is more concentrated due to the water to coffee ratio. Additionally, phin filters don’t require a paper filter, so the extraction process and final cup differ from pour over.

Watch our video explaining the phin filter here.

Why are your phins more expensive?

Our pricing is derived from a variety of factors such as fair labor wages, costs of materials, and production. Our producers are a small, woman-owned team in Vietnam who make our phin filters in batches. Phins at supermarkets may have been mass produced in factories without any information provided on origin or sourcing. We’re striving to be as transparent and ethical as possible through every level of our business, and the prices are an effort to reflect that.

Why is my phin filter dripping too fast/too slow?

Factors including how you're grinding, what’s your grind size is, and whether or not you have dialed in the grind size to the phin filter affect total brew time.

For Nguyen Coffee Supply phin filters, we recommend a fine grind size and a 2:1 ratio of water to coffee. For other phin filters, we recommend experimenting to dial in according to that specific filter.

For example, coffee that is too coarse will drip too fast. Using less than 2 tbsp of coffee in a 4 oz phin filter may result in a fast drip as well.
